bird on a wire

For the mornings
that bring with them
jammed-packed days.
For the the days when your mind is racing
long before your feet hit the floor.
For the sunrises that greet
the leftover to-dos from yesterday.
For now and then,
rest.

I have one of those days stacking up today.
Maybe you do, too.
Those days where you just have so much to do
that you feel like a bird on a wire
and a cat on a hot tin roof
all at the same time.

How in the world do we find
rest
on a day like today?

It has to be something we look for.
Hunt for.
Search and seek
and even
fight for.
There has to be a moment or two of rest today.
Has. To. Be.
For the sake of us
and our loved ones
and the strangers with whom we'll come in contact.

Maybe it's five minutes to sit.
That chair in the quiet hallway?
It's calling your name.
In between the to-dos, sit there.
For just a moment.

The family member who offers to help?
Swallow your pride
and accept his or her gift of time and talent.
Doing so might just
invite a couple of minutes
of rest into your day.

Keep a sharp eye out today
in the middle of the hubbub
to find the rest-filled pauses
that God offers you.

And when He reveals them to you,
stop
and thank Him
and
rest.

But there’s one other thing I remember,
and remembering, I keep a grip on hope:

God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out,
his merciful love couldn’t have dried up.
They’re created new every morning.
    How great your faithfulness!
I’m sticking with God (I say it over and over).
    He’s all I’ve got left.

God proves to be good to the man who passionately waits,
to the woman who diligently seeks.
It’s a good thing to quietly hope,
quietly hope for help from God.
It’s a good thing when you’re young
to stick it out through the hard times.

When life is heavy and hard to take,
go off by yourself. Enter the silence.
Bow in prayer. Don’t ask questions:
    Wait for hope to appear.
Don’t run from trouble. Take it full-face.
The “worst” is never the worst.

Why? Because the Master won’t ever
walk out and fail to return.

~Lamentations 3:21-31

 Many blessings,
Deni
